WHAT ARE MY BATHROOM OPTIONS ON KILIMANJARO?

Public Bathrooms

Public toilets are available at every camp stop, but those are not the bathrooms you are used to using at home, restaurants, hotels or airports.  Remember you are in a totally secluded place thousands of feet above the see level. Depending on the campsite, the bathrooms are usually a wooden shack with a deep hole in the ground (known as a 'long drop'), sometimes even without a door.  Due to the fact that so many people uses them, they are often not clean and smelly. If you're really in a bind, you can always find a secluded spot to answer the call of nature. Make sure to keep a safe distance from water sources, and away from the trails and pick up after yourselves.

Private Bathroom on Kilimanjaro

Private Bathrooms

At Kilimanjaro Trekker and Safari, we provide private toilets in the form of tents, as well as portable plastic toilets to ensure you and your group has the privacy you need. These facilities are only set up and available in camp and our designated porters will ensure they are carried between camps. All of our facilities are kept clean and sanitary to ensure an enjoyable experience for your group.  The use of a portable private toilet is included as standard with every one of our climbs.

On The Trail

You can stop along the way to use the restroom in nature. Locate a bush, tree, or rock and hide behind it to do your business. You might wish to let your guide know in order to prevent confusion.  Above the tree line, things become more difficult.  You might have to look for a bigger bush or a suitable boulder or rock formation. Although it is not required, it is morally and ethically correct to carry your used toilet paper. It can be thrown away in the garbage at the following campsite.  It is a good idea to pack some disposable plastic bags in your day pack.

Washing

Kilimanjaro does not have any showers. It is therefore best to thoroughly clean yourself in the last shower you take before starting your climb. On Kilimanjaro, your only options for personal hygiene are water and any wipes or cloths you pack. Every day, water will be available for washing your face and hands.
